NBA Playoff Analysis and Predictions

NBA

Analysis:

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau beamed with pride as he described Jalen Brunson’s 38-point, nine-rebound, seven-assist performance in a must-win 112-103 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

As eye-popping as the numbers were for the guard who has quickly become one of Thibodeau’s favorite players in his first season with the Knicks, the stat that really made Thibodeau gush was the 48 in the minutes column. Not only did Brunson lead his team offensively, he played every second of the game to make sure the Knicks forced a Game 6 Friday night in Miami.

Stephen Curry had 27 points and eight assists, Andrew Wiggins added 25 points, seven rebounds and five assist, and the defending champion Golden State Warriors staved off elimination by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 121-106 in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night.

LeBron James had 25 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles. Anthony Davis added 23 points and nine rebounds but went to the locker room late after appearing to take a hit in the head from Kevon Looney.

Austin Reaves made a 3-pointer with 5:25 to play that cut the Warriors’ lead to single digits at 104-95 only for Curry to answer with five straight points, then he hit another big shot after D’Angelo Russell connected from deep.

Draymond Green contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds as Golden State played tough defense that led to better chances on the offensive end — just as coach Steve Kerr has challenged his team to to.

Now, it’s back to LA for Game 6 on Friday night with the Lakers 5-0 at home this postseason, having won eight consecutive games on their own floor since losing to the Bulls on March 26.

Naging back to back MVP ang player nilang si Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The 2022-23 NBA season is almost over, but the standings and playoff matchups are far from set.

WHO WILL WIN?

NBA Analysis :

Less than two weeks ago, the Miami Heat were trailing with under five minutes to go in the final Eastern Conference play-in game against the Chicago Bulls. At that point, it was easy to see a world in which the Heat wouldn’t even make the playoffs — and more challenging to see them pulling off one of the biggest upsets in NBA history after doing so.

And yet, that’s exactly what the Heat did Wednesday night, riding 42 points from Jimmy Butler to beat the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks — who entered the postseason as the clear favorites to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy for a second time in three years — 128-126 in overtime at Fiserv Forum in Game 5 of this first-round series, sending Giannis Antetokounmpo and his teammates crashing out of the postseason in the process. Miami advances to face the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals beginning Sunday.

In many ways, Game 5 was a repeat of the one the teams played in Miami 48 hours earlier — up to and including the Heat pulling off a ridiculous comeback to stun the Bucks. While Miami controlled more of this game than it did Game 4, the Bucks were in control for large portions of it and took a 22-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

But after Milwaukee didn’t score for over three minutes to start the fourth and didn’t make a field goal for nearly five minutes, Miami slowly dragged itself back into the game — in large part because Milwaukee’s offense couldn’t get started in the final period.

Stephen Curry scored 31 points, Draymond Green had his highest-scoring game in more than five years and the Golden State Warriors won the first road game of their series against Sacramento, beating the Kings 123-116 Wednesday night to take a 3-2 lead.

Green had 21 points and seven assists in his first game back in Sacramento since getting ejected and later suspended for stepping on Domantas Sabonis chest in a Game 2 loss.

Golden State now can try to wrap up the series with a fourth straight win at home on Friday night.

The defending champion Warriors withstood another raucous crowd in Sacramento and showed off their road mettle that had been missing so often this season.

Golden State won only 11 games away from home in the regular season and lost the first two games in Sacramento before making the key plays in the second half to beat the Kings and extend their record to 28 straight playoff series with at least one road win.

The Kings trailed by 12 early in the fourth quarter after a layup by Curry but wouldn’t go away. They chipped away at the deficit behind 11 points in the next five minutes from Monk — who went down briefly with what looked like a left knee injury — to make it a one-point game with just over four minutes left.

But the Warriors pulled away late after Monk missed a potential game-tying 3 with 1:04 to play.

Andrew Wiggins made a turnaround jumper to make it a five-point game and Curry put it away with a three-point play with 22.1 seconds left that made it 122-114.

Klay Thompson added 25 points, Wiggins had 20 and Kevon Looney matched his career-high with 22 rebounds.

De’Aaron Fox scored 24 despite a broken index finger on his shooting hand, and Monk and Sabonis added 21 points apiece for Sacramento.

NBA Prediction:

Two nights after promising that the Memphis Grizzlies would stave off elimination, Bane delivered in a 116-99 Game 5 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, scoring a game-high 33 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Then Bane guaranteed that the Grizzlies would return to FedExForum, where they had the best home record in the NBA this season.

“We got to come with the right edge and the right road mentality, but I said it out there and I’ll say it again,” Bane said. “We’re going to be back for a Game 7 in front of the best fans in the NBA.”

Vietnam – Thailand

Sea Games

The highlight of today’s competition day is the match that decides the top spot of Group B of Vietnam’s runner-up against the Philippines, SEA Games 32 volleyball. Although the Philippines is much underestimated compared to the Vietnamese team, this match is deciding both the ticket to the semi-finals and the final, so coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s army is still very cautious.

If the planned plan is that Vietnam is unbeaten and enters the semi-finals with first place in Group A, the Vietnamese team will avoid the “death” of Thailand – the defending champion in the semifinals. Thus, the opportunity for Vietnam to enter the final is almost certain.

Up to now, the Vietnamese women’s volleyball team has never won against Thailand at the national team level of all ages.

Sea Games

The Philippines Team, even without Alyssa Valdez, the Filipina’s indoor volleyball team won their first match at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, dominating hosts Cambodia 3-0 (25-3, 25-5, 25-5) on Tuesday (9 May).

Captain Valdez is desperate to lead her team to a first SEA Game medal in 18 years after coming in the dreaded fourth place at the past three editions.

Winning the first match is a good way to start.

On Wednesday (10 May), the Philippines take on Vietnam, the second-placed finishers in the past 10 of 11 Games.

Thailand has dominated with 13 consecutive titles and won their first match beating Indonesia 3-0. Having come second or third in the past three Games, Indonesia will also be one to watch.

The last team to claim the gold medal was the Philippines in 1993. Subsequent to that, the Filipinas have won two silver and three bronze medals but it’s been a while since they stepped on the podium. They’ve been going all out to change that, spending two weeks training together in Osaka, Japan under the stewardship of Brazil’s head coach Jorge Souza de Brito, a 1992 Olympic gold medallist.

So it’s a good start for the Filipinas but it’s just the beginning if they want to make it to the semi-final matches on 13 May, and the gold, silver, and bronze medal matches on 14 May.

SEA Games 2023 Women Volleyball Preliminary Results Tuesday 9 May

Group A

Malaysia beat Myanmar 3-0 – 25-14, 25-16, 25-13

Thailand beat Indonesia 3-0 – 25-16, 25-16, 25-16

Group B

Vietnam beat Singapore 3-0 – 25-13, 25-8, 25-7

Philippines v Cambodia 3-0 – 25-3, 25-5, 25-5

The Philippine men’s volleyball team kissed its medal hopes goodbye as it fell to host Cambodia, 18-25, 18-25, 17-25, in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games before an ecstatic home crowd on Thursday evening at Indoor Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.

Even before the opening ceremonies on Friday, the Filipino spikers had already bombed out of podium contention as they couldn’t stop Pin Sarun and the Cambodians, who earned their second straight win in Pool A to join defending champion Indonesia in the semifinals.

Following an 18-25, 18-25, 23-25 loss to Indonesia on Wednesday, the rebuilding national team lost its second Group A match and missed the semifinals for the second straight time since its historic silver medal finish in 2019.

Sarun led the charge for Cambodia, which bagged a breakthrough bronze medal last year, as he dealt the damage to the visitors with 13 points including the last two kills in the third set that sent the home crowd into a wild celebration after the 77-minute match.

Mouen Menglaiy also shattered the hopes of the Filipinos as he poured five of his 12 points in the third set as Cambodia advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive biennial meet with a 2-0 record in Group A, following a 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 win over Singapore on Wednesday.

“I know this is a hard game you played Cambodia it’s the (bronze medalist) in the SEA Games and we played (in front of a lot of their fans) in their home. But I think today our team played better than yesterday,” said national team coach Sergio Veloso.

Setter Suon Channaro paced the Cambodians’ offense, outplaying the Filipinos in attacking, 38-24. Phol Ratanak and Kuon Mom were also instrumental with eight and six markers, respectively. The host will wrap up its Group A campaign on Saturday against Indonesia, which also earned its second win earlier against Singapore, 29-27, 25-8, 25-10.

Sea Games

Jade Disquitado, the youngest member of the Philippines at age 18, was the lone bright spot for the rebuilding team with eight points, scoring five in the opening set.

The Philippines’ closest chance against Cambodia was when Lloyd Josafat nailed a block to tie the second set at 2-2. However, the home team caught fire and scored seven straight points for a 12-5 lead from Disquitado’s back-to-back errors and never looked back to take a 2-0 match advantage.

Disquitado and Jay Rack De La Noche kept the Cambodians within two midway third set, 10-12, but Menglaiy continued to torch the Filipinos as he was nearly unstoppable in the frame before Sarun put on the finishing touches.

Sea Games

Filipino-American Opposite Spiker Steve Rotter finished with seven points but committed a couple of attack and service errors in the match, while Spikers’ Turf reigning MVP Jau Umandal, the lone holdover of the historic 2019 team, was limited to just four points after a scoreless third set.

“Kulang kami sa end game. Yung error namin ng early lumalabas. Kami nahihirapan sa end game dahil dumadami error namin,” said Umandal.

“Yung aim pa rin namin manalo pa rin sa Singapore. Strong finish. Wala na kami sa top two pero kailangan namin makuha yung panalo kahit sa ranking match lang kagaya nung 2022 SEA Games. Wala kami sa top 2 pero top (5) pa rin kami.”

The rebuilding Philippine national team is relegated in the classification match for 5th to 8th places but it will end its Group A campaign against the winless Singapore on Saturday at 6 p.m.

2023 Asian Sea Games Cricket Update

Philippines Women’s Cricket Team – Silver Medalist

Sea Games

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The Philippines won its first-ever Southeast Asian Games medal in cricket, bagging silver in the women’s sixes on Wednesday behind a team that included some Filipina domestic helpers based in Hong Kong.

The Philippine team earned a trip to the gold-medal match following a 54-42 win over host Cambodia at the AZ Group Cricket Oval before losing to Indonesia, 78-25, in the final.

READ: HK domestic helpers break down barriers with the all-Filipino cricket team

The historic silver comes as the women’s T10 team is also slated to compete for the gold medal on the final day of this biennial competition on May 16 against an opponent still to be determined.

Their T10 event is not finished yet but the Philippine women’s team has already secured a guaranteed silver medal in that event as well,” said Faisal Khan, the Philippine Cricket Association chief executive officer.

Sea Games

Khan confirmed that some members of the team are domestic helpers based in Hong Kong, which hosts its own popular Sixes cricket tournament.

The team is made up of Jennifer Alumbro, Jhon Andreano, Josie Arimas, Shanilyn Asis, Catherine Bagaoisan, Jona Eguid, Joelle Galapin, Mar Mandia, Johannah McCall, Lolita Olagiure, Romela Osabel, Riza Penalba, April Saquilon, Simran Sirah, and Alex Smith.

Cricket debuted in the 2017 SEA Games, and made its comeback this year.

“Getting a medal in their first appearance is a big achievement. I can see a much-better performance in future events,” said Khan.

The men’s team is composed of captain Daniel Tolosa Smith, Henry Yamsuan Tyler, Jean-Miguel Catapang Podosky, Jonathan Gabila Hill, Josef Abayata Doctora, Richard Etang, Neil Abrea Smith, Jordan Alegre, Grant Varona Russ, Kepler Ang Lukies, Ryan Frederick Hutton, Jan Haider Kiani, Amanpreet Figuerra Sirah, Hernie Pajarilla Isorena and Robert David Mitchell.

The women’s line-up has Josie Treyes Arimas (T20 captain), Jennifer Olmillo Alumbro (six-a-side captain), Simranjeet Figuerra Sirah (T10 captain), JK Andreano, Romela Bautista Osabel, Alex Bobbi Yerro Smith, Riza Dacutan Penalba, Lolita Angeles Olagiuer, Jonna Salmorin Eguid, April Escarlan Saquilon, Johannah Hulipas, Joelle Fuentebella Galapin, Catherine Liza Bagaoisan, Shanilyn Quebral Asis, and Ma. Sea Games

The Philippines will be looking to put their best foot forward against our international neighbors and showcase the growth of Filipino cricket alongside contending for medals in both categories,” Khan said in an interview on Monday.

He said the players have been training diligently for their debut in the biennial meet.

“All our training and programs are based in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Our cricket facilities and ground are located at Emilio Aguinaldo College campus,” said Khan, an immigrant from Pakistan who has been working for the development of cricket in the Philippines for the last 35 years.

He noted that both teams achieved their highest international rankings, with the men’s team at No. 42 and the women’s team at No. 54.

The PCA was formed in 1999. It has been a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2003.

The first Philippine team, then skippered by Khan, took part in the ICC East Asia Pacific regional tournament in Samoa in 2011.

Last year, the national team joined the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier A in Oman.

Khan has observed the growing interest in cricket in a country where basketball is the most popular sport.

“Promoting cricket in the Philippines has been an uphill battle for us but with all the hard work, volunteer contribution, and proper management, we have been improving and growing year after year,” said Khan.

“We have a grassroots program, which is called Junior Development Program, that includes free coaching, equipment, and training for age groups 12 to 17 years old through school clinics, junior leagues, barangay clinics, etc. We also have an Under-19 program that is aimed to create a U-19 team that can represent the Philippines at international level,” he added.

After the Cambodia SEA Games, the men’s team will see action at the T20 World Cup qualifiers to be hosted by Papua New Guinea in July.
