Analysis:
As considered a question about whether the Boston Celtics should have called a timeout to set up their final possession at the end of regulation or in overtime of a 116-115 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 4 on Sunday, star Jayson Tatum recalled the strategy that paid off a year earlier.
Then, with the Celtics down by one at the end of the final possession against the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the 2022 NBA playoffs, Boston rebounded a miss from Kevin Durant and went on offense without calling a timeout, leading to a game-winning layup from Tatum in the final seconds.
So, even though the buzzer sounded Sunday at the end of overtime before Marcus Smart could release a 3-pointer that would have been the game-winner, the Celtics were content with their late-game execution — besides the fact that Tatum added he should have started the play a moment faster.
“You’ve got to trust the guys on the floor are going to make the right plays,” Tatum said during his postgame media availability. “I should’ve passed it probably a second earlier [in overtime], but at the end of regulation, I got a great shot.
“Sometimes the ball goes in, sometimes it doesn’t, but we got a good core group of guys that know how to play, especially in those situations. It just doesn’t always go your way.”
The Celtics almost stole Game 4 despite falling behind by 16 points and giving up a game-high 42 points to James Harden. Still, Boston had a pair of chances to win the game, on the final possession at the end of the fourth quarter and in overtime.
Referees and Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon came over to ensure nothing got out of hand and tensions did not flare up. Jokic, who finished with a game-high 53 points, was later handed a technical foul but remained in the game with the Nuggets leading 55-54. Phoenix would win by a final score of 129-124 to even the Western Conference semifinal series at two games apiece.
Crew chief Tony Brothers, speaking to a pool reporter after the game, said the Nuggets center was issued an unsportsmanlike technical foul because after he grabbed the ball away from “the fan,” Jokic “deliberately gave him a shove and pushed him down.”
The Nuggets are deep. Every time the world is collectively shocked that Jeff Green is still contributing to a playoff rotation at the age of 36, we overlook the fact that he is usually called upon for fewer than 20 minutes per game and he knows his role: Rebound, defend, move the ball. Fourteen-year veterans can play 18 minutes per game in the playoffs when they are able to focus like that. On an eight-man rotation, Green is Denver’s seventh offensive option. The six above him have all averaged double-digits through seven games in these playoffs.
The Suns are not deep, especially without Paul. They should have a six or seven-man rotation tonight, with the sixth being Bismack Biyombo (10.1 minutes per game in seven games these playoffs) and the seventh either Damion Lee (12.2 in six games) or Landry Shamet (11.5 in six games). Of the core five, Torrey Craig and Josh Okogie are both playing more than 20 minutes per game while scoring fewer than 10 points per game. Okogie’s role is certainly not offensive, but he is still scoring just 4.9 points in 20.1 minutes per playoff game.
Phoenix does not have enough quality depth to replace Paul’s playmaking and bucket-getting. Only three available players are consistently scoring for the Suns.
That showed in Game 2’s fourth quarter. Paul was in the locker room. It began with the Suns leading 73-70. On 19 fourth-quarter possessions, Phoenix scored just 14 points, while Denver poured in 27 points on 18 possessions.
Focusing on that disparity runs the risk of putting too much value into a small sample size, but the Nuggets do not need to dominate that aggressively again. They simply need to outpace the Paul-less Suns by one point throughout an entire game. A team that already thrives in transition should excel against a team that may play only seven players, and two of them will be Deandre Ayton and Biyombo — not exactly defenders who will get back down the court with expediency.
Durant and Booker are two of the best scorers in the game, but they cannot play all five positions, and the Nuggets will make the Suns pay for that tonight.

NBA Analysis :
Less than two weeks ago, the Miami Heat were trailing with under five minutes to go in the final Eastern Conference play-in game against the Chicago Bulls. At that point, it was easy to see a world in which the Heat wouldn’t even make the playoffs — and more challenging to see them pulling off one of the biggest upsets in NBA history after doing so.
And yet, that’s exactly what the Heat did Wednesday night, riding 42 points from Jimmy Butler to beat the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks — who entered the postseason as the clear favorites to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy for a second time in three years — 128-126 in overtime at Fiserv Forum in Game 5 of this first-round series, sending Giannis Antetokounmpo and his teammates crashing out of the postseason in the process. Miami advances to face the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals beginning Sunday.
In many ways, Game 5 was a repeat of the one the teams played in Miami 48 hours earlier — up to and including the Heat pulling off a ridiculous comeback to stun the Bucks. While Miami controlled more of this game than it did Game 4, the Bucks were in control for large portions of it and took a 22-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
But after Milwaukee didn’t score for over three minutes to start the fourth and didn’t make a field goal for nearly five minutes, Miami slowly dragged itself back into the game — in large part because Milwaukee’s offense couldn’t get started in the final period.
Stephen Curry scored 31 points, Draymond Green had his highest-scoring game in more than five years and the Golden State Warriors won the first road game of their series against Sacramento, beating the Kings 123-116 Wednesday night to take a 3-2 lead.
Green had 21 points and seven assists in his first game back in Sacramento since getting ejected and later suspended for stepping on Domantas Sabonis chest in a Game 2 loss.
Golden State now can try to wrap up the series with a fourth straight win at home on Friday night.
The defending champion Warriors withstood another raucous crowd in Sacramento and showed off their road mettle that had been missing so often this season.
Golden State won only 11 games away from home in the regular season and lost the first two games in Sacramento before making the key plays in the second half to beat the Kings and extend their record to 28 straight playoff series with at least one road win.
The Kings trailed by 12 early in the fourth quarter after a layup by Curry but wouldn’t go away. They chipped away at the deficit behind 11 points in the next five minutes from Monk — who went down briefly with what looked like a left knee injury — to make it a one-point game with just over four minutes left.
But the Warriors pulled away late after Monk missed a potential game-tying 3 with 1:04 to play.
Andrew Wiggins made a turnaround jumper to make it a five-point game and Curry put it away with a three-point play with 22.1 seconds left that made it 122-114.
Klay Thompson added 25 points, Wiggins had 20 and Kevon Looney matched his career-high with 22 rebounds.
De’Aaron Fox scored 24 despite a broken index finger on his shooting hand, and Monk and Sabonis added 21 points apiece for Sacramento.
NBA Prediction:
Two nights after promising that the Memphis Grizzlies would stave off elimination, Bane delivered in a 116-99 Game 5 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, scoring a game-high 33 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Then Bane guaranteed that the Grizzlies would return to FedExForum, where they had the best home record in the NBA this season.
“We got to come with the right edge and the right road mentality, but I said it out there and I’ll say it again,” Bane said. “We’re going to be back for a Game 7 in front of the best fans in the NBA.”
